At its peak, ToysRus (Toys R Us, “toys are us”) owned 800 stores in the United States and the same number in Britain, Canada, and other countries. The store sold more than $20 billion worth of toys annually. It had millions of fans. But this could not go on for long.

In September 2017, the toy store ToysRus had to declare bankruptcy. This surprised a great many people, given its popularity. But it turned out the company had been operating at a loss since 2013. The problem was very low prices, and constant competition with giants such as Amazon and Walmart, which were developing their online offerings.
The costs of offline stores were too high, the ToysRus online store could not compete with Amazon, and so the company had to declare capitulation. It took on debt to keep toy prices as low as possible, but it could not survive until November-December, the main sales season in America, on which management had pinned high hopes.
The bankruptcy of the ToysRus store became almost a national tragedy for America. People cried, shared their stories, talked about what toys from the company they had in childhood, and brought flowers to the stores. Everyone liked the cozier, more home-like atmosphere that this brand created.
For a long two years, nothing was heard from ToysRus. The company was dealing with debts, selling all its locations, and trying to understand what it should do next.
And then, finally, in October 2019, a new official ToysRus online store launched. Completely redesigned, although retaining elements of the original design. For now, this is only a small part of what existed before, but many in America are already happy even with this — as a symbol of the brand's revival. Right now the Toys Rus website mainly offers reviews, videos, and toy ratings. And it offers information about the best toys in each category.
The new ToysRus is still difficult to call an online store. The company still does not have its own capacities. The site merely redirects buyers to Target offers. Where they can complete their purchase.
Of course, this is only the first step so far, but those who are used to the ToysRus interface can already choose and buy toys in an environment that is more convenient for them. And most importantly — this time the company did make it in time for the start of the Christmas and New Year season!
In December 2019, the company officially announced its return: it opened a new (first) store. In New Jersey — where it had once started seventy years earlier. Its area is only 500 square meters, it is ten times smaller than the stores that had to be closed in 2017, and this space also includes entertainment for children, like a slide and a ball room.
The ToysRus online store, in all its former quality, should be revived in 2020. The first of its own online offers should appear there soon as well. The company plans to produce toys under its own Tru Kids brand, and sell them on the official toys rus website. The story of the brand continues. It is gradually reviving from oblivion.
And we can't wait for the time when it will again be possible to ship the most interesting toys from ToysRus from America to Russian kids :)
