History of Bermuda Shorts

In the 1920s, such shortened trousers were worn by the military. They could safely travel through areas with a tropical climate. Bermudas did not hug the body, which allowed the skin to "breathe". Thanks to the loose cut and material, this wardrobe item became popular not only among the military, but also among ordinary people. 

The first Bermuda models were sewn from gray flannel and worn with white knee socks. A few years later, managers of some banks began ordering 2 pairs per employee from tailors. Later, clothing production was opened on the Bermuda Islands. It was there that Bermudas first went on sale as freely available trousers, and not as military uniforms. 

After the end of the war, entrepreneurs realized that summer flannel Bermudas would not be popular. People wanted bright colors, which led to a change in concept. This is how the first multi-colored trousers with patterns from H.A&E. Smiths and Trimingham Bros appeared. The improved Bermudas caused a sensation: this became the basis of beach and youth fashion; later they appeared at fashion shows. From the period 1950-1970 women's Bermudas appeared. In Vogue magazine, photos of girls in short trousers for everyday wear became commonplace. Later, elongated shorts began to appear more often in collections and at fashion shows.

Bermudas today

Today bermudas are a convenient wardrobe item that every stylish woman has. There are also men’s models of shorts. Every season designers change the cut and colors of the shorts, setting a new trend.

The main difference between bermudas and regular shorts is their length. They should be 7 cm above the knee (now they can also be lower). A properly chosen model visually “lengthens” the figure, hides all flaws and accentuates the advantages. The fashionable 2020 models feature a strict silhouette, a high waist and wide legs.

• Linen — the same advantages as cotton. The disadvantage is that the fabric wrinkles a lot, yet linen bermudas have become an indispensable item for summer heat;
• Viscose — a natural material obtained by artificial means. The fabric feels pleasant to the touch, is soft and suitable for sports shorts;
• Spandex — an interweaving of elastic threads that forms a durable fabric. 
• Elastane — a dense and elastic fabric based on spandex. 

Which bermudas are trending? Chloe and Bottega Veneta have made the shorts simpler. Chloe lowered the waist and paired it with a white corset. The second brand set the trend for eco-leather models combined with mesh tops.

What to Wear with Bermuda Shorts

Summer models pair well with T-shirts, thin-strap tops, and oversized blouses. For a practical wardrobe item, comfortable shoes (loafers, ballet flats, beach flip-flops or sandals) will work. A straw hat, tote bag, and oversized sunglasses will help complete the look.  

In the shoulder season, Bermuda shorts are worn over dark thick tights (if it’s not cold, sheer tights will work too). Pair them with turtlenecks, sweaters, or shirts on top. Finish the look with a long cardigan. For outerwear choose a long coat; for footwear go with tall boots, heeled ankle boots, or sneakers. For accessories, opt for a chunky-knit snood or scarf and a small crossbody bag.

What to wear with women’s Bermuda shorts to the office? Thin blouses, a simple tank in a slightly lighter shade, and loose or tailored blazers work great with classic shorts. Any shoes are fine, but heeled sandals are the best option.
