Four years later, in 1978, French Connection releases its first collection of casual clothing for children, men and women. However, the company's main income at that time came from men's clothing.
A new page in the history of French Connection was written by designer Nicole Farhi. Having made a couture career in Paris and then in Italy, she became the chief designer of the brand in 1978. Having led the company through the crisis of the eighties, Nicole gave the brand new life in the 90s.
The popularity of the French Connection brand was based on a simple abbreviation: French Connection UK or FCUK. FCUK management has always insisted on the accidental similarity between fcuk and fuck, but has invariably built aggressive advertising on this similarity.
FCUK fashion
It is rumored that the notorious abbreviation was first sent by fax from Hong Kong. FCHK to FCUK (French Connection Hong Kong to French Connection United Kingdom). This name update caused a scandal, which, oddly enough, only benefited the brand. In 1997, at the suggestion of French Connection creative director Alice Green, the brand's products began to come out clothing with the fcuk label.
Aggressive advertising was fused with demonstrative disregard for fashion trends, foreshadowing slow fashion. Casual style, comfortable cut, quality materials, simplified adult models adapted for children — the French Connection brand combined relaxed everyday clothing for the middle class with sexualized, almost indecent nihilistic provocativeness.

This approach angered the UK's Advertising Standards Authority. Bold posters with a diagonally cropped image of a model and the inscription fcuk fashion intrigued some and irritated others.
The second fcuk advertising campaign already had a footnote to the word fcuk explaining the meaning of the abbreviation. But along with the scandal, recognition grew, and so did profits. The response to the scandals were T-shirts with slogans: fcuk football, fcuk off, fcuk this, fcuk football and all in that vein. By 2001, there were already 60 branded boutiques in Britain.
The success of FCUK clothing spurred the brand's expansion. Under the French Connection brand, they begin to produce watches, licenses are acquired for the production of shoes, alcohol and condoms. Two pairs of perfumes were also released: «fcuk for her», «fcuk for him», «fcuk connect her», «fcuk connect him».
French Connection. Fashion vs Style
However, for FCUK, perfumes and watches were, after all, a secondary battlefield. The new 2006 campaign was built around an underground fight and the final kiss of two women, symbolizing the opposition between fashion and style. It was assumed that French Connection sided with style — clothing style and lifestyle — with elements including the fcuk-fm radio and umbrellas bearing the FCUK RAIN print. The boutique in London shocked passersby with the slogan “The world`s biggest fcuk”, while in San Francisco it read: “San Francisco`s first fcuk”.
However, the new burst of provocation received a mixed reaction, and the group Groovecutters even accused them of plagiarism. At some point, many Brits grew tired of fcuk`s radicalism. Americans, on the contrary, caught the wave of “British style”, appreciating the brand`s assertive approach.
