Etsy: what kind of platform
On the site, masters and craftswomen display their products. Mostly from America, but also from other countries. Each master has their own page. There you can see reviews of their work and their place of residence, contact them by writing a message. Masters value their reputation and are proud of selling quality goods. The total number of sales and average rating are also visible on their page, and if their work inspires you, you can add them to your favorites list. Talented masters who have lived on the Etsy site for a long time have tens of thousands of fans.
The store unites handicraftsmen from all over the world, so you can find almost everything here. The choice is huge. Even if your hobby seems very specific to you, similar products on Etsy will almost certainly be found.
Here are just a few figures demonstrating sales volumes:
70 million items are listed on the site in total.
- 2.5 million sellers are currently active on the platform; 90% of them are one-person businesses;
- 87% of Etsy sellers are women;
- someone buys a wedding or engagement ring here every 90 seconds;
- 12 clothing models and 3 pairs of shoes are sold every minute;
- the company is mentioned on Instagram 4 times more often than Amazon and 12 times more often than eBay;
- more than 100 million people visit the official Etsy site every month;
- more than 2 thousand items from the “furniture” category are sold in the store every day;
- in 2019, more than 1.5 million gifts for groomsmen and bridesmaids were sold here;
- last year, 70% more children's toys were sold on Etsy than in 2018.
Recently the platform became Russian-speaking, a little more convenient for sellers and buyers from the CIS. Categories can now be selected in their native language. But it is still better to search for goods in English – this way search works better and delivers more accurate results. It is also more convenient to order goods to an address in the USA to save on delivery and actually shorten the time it takes to receive them.
What is sold at the Etsy store
Almost everything on display on the platform is hand-made. Unique products that cannot be found anywhere else. This includes:
1. Home items
Beautiful paintings, rugs. Hand-painted plates or trays. Personalized signs, unbreakable flower pots with masterfully engraved patterns. Pillows and towels with hand embroidery, for which you can specify the design yourself. Pet beds, small figurines, unique dolls, creative decor elements, and much more.
2. Vintage items
By searching for “vintage” in the Etsy store you can find furniture, shoes, clothing and accessories from Europe, America, Asia and even Africa from the 1940s-1980s. There are items from the last century! You can sort by the era you are interested in. Vintage outfits and unique reconstructions are sold here in large quantities and at relatively low prices.
3. Interesting jewelry and small items
From popular dainty rings, thin elegant rings that decorate the finger, to printed products, scrapbooking and various covers, for example for documents. Many items are made to order, so you can specify both size and design. If you plan to take something as a gift, note that such work may take up to a couple of weeks, and delivery to Russia – another couple of weeks. So it’s better to buy on Etsy in advance, ideally two or three months before the event.
Here you can get earrings, pendants, bracelets, rings and so on at low prices. It will cost less than in some boutique, where your money pays for store rent and salespeople’s work. And the item will be unique – if you wish, even with your name or zodiac sign. Etsy can also make paired jewelry for you (wedding rings, double bracelets, necklaces where each has its own half, and so on).
4. Gifts!
For someone who has everything, you should buy the gift only on Etsy! If they haven’t bought from the same seller on Etsy before, they are unlikely to have anything similar. If you simply search for the word “gifts”, you will get about 10 million gift offers! Next, just specify who exactly the gift is for (“gifts for father”, “gifts for boyfriend”), set the desired price in the filter, and choose a category (“Jewelry”, “Clothing”, “Wallets”, “Electronics”, and so on). And here is the perfect item!
Just remember that gifts, again, should be taken care of in advance. Etsy is not suitable for last-minute purchases.
How to buy and deliver from the Etsy store
You can often negotiate discounts with sellers. Write to them before placing an order. This way, you can also get some additional services.
Remember that Etsy – this is only a platform where sellers are based. When adding to your cart, you are essentially ordering from different stores, each – with its own shipping conditions. Usually, the cheapest way to send an order from Etsy is to the US; such delivery can often be either free or cost a minimal $3.50-$6.50. Shipping conditions depend on the specific seller and their place of residence.
After registering on Etsy you can start purchasing items. The site itself groups them in the cart by sellers, so if you ordered several items from the same maker, you will see that you do not have to pay for shipping more than once. Payment on Etsy can be made with a bank card or via PayPal. At the same time, if you are not registered with PayPal, $1 will be charged from your card to check that your card is working. This money will be returned within one month.
After the purchase, a confirmation email will be sent to the email address you specified. The seller may also send a tracking code so you can check the movement of your package.
