In 2010, Bain Capital bought the Gymboree children's clothing store for $1,8 billion. It also included the Crazy 8 and Janie and Jack brands, as well as Play & Music stores. Because of its low-price policy and large number of locations (1300 in the USA), in 2017 Gymboree was forced to file documents to begin bankruptcy proceedings. It closed most of its stores and restructured its debts.
But in 2019, the Gymboree children's clothing store went bankrupt again — losses for the year amounted to more than $370 million, and the store was unable to refinance its debt. This time, the point in the company's history was almost the final one. All Crazy 8 and Gymboree stores closed, and the Janie & Jack brand was sold for just a few million.
In June 2019, it was announced that Gymboree's developments, designs, and production facilities had been sold to another children's clothing store, The Children's Place. This company announced that it would relaunch the Gymboree website and would sell exclusive items, part of 40-year American history, online so that those who wanted them would still have the opportunity to buy them.
