History of Gymboree Children's Clothing (Gymboree)
The company was founded in 1976 by John Barn. Initially, it produced educational musical children's toys. The «Gymboree Play & Music» network became very popular, with 900 locations across the country. In the end, the brand became so well-known that in 1986 it decided to enter the children's clothing market. Its specialization became the production of items for children — from newborns to 12 years old. The Gymboree store also started selling shoes and various accessories that complement the outfit.
Now, clothing from the Gymboree online store is worn by both children of billionaires and toddlers of Hollywood stars. It is comfortable, made of soft materials, stylish, often — with loose designs. It is beautiful and fashionable, but does not hinder the child from exploring the world.
In 2010, Bain Capital bought the Gymboree children's clothing store for $1,8 billion. It also included the Crazy 8, Janie and Jack brands, and Play & Music stores. Due to its low-price policy and large number of locations (1300 in the USA), in 2017 Gymboree was forced to file for bankruptcy proceedings. It closed most of its stores and restructured its debts.
But in 2019, the Gymboree children's clothing store went bankrupt again — losses for the year amounted to more than $370 million, and the store was unable to refinance its debt. This time, the point in the company's history was almost final. All Crazy 8 and Gymboree stores closed, and the Janie & Jack brand was sold for just a few million.
In June 2019, it was announced that Gymboree's developments, designs, and production facilities were sold to another children's clothing store, The Children's Place. This company announced that it would relaunch the Gymboree website and would sell exclusive items, part of 40 years of American history, online, so that those interested would still have the opportunity to buy them.
As a result, Gymboree.com relaunched in February 2020, and now the store is fully available to customers again. Gymboree children's clothing can be purchased only online, as well as in three offline Children's Place stores in Chicago, San Francisco and New York.
