This man's journey and the history of his brand began in 1963 in the heart of Manhattan, New York. Marc learned his first skills from his grandmother, who raised him. From her, he learned how to knit and inherited her interest in beautiful things. 

Jacobs' interest in fashion and beauty was not fleeting, so when it came time to choose a job, Marc joined the trendy clothing store Charivari and immersed himself in conversations with designers. 

Soon Jacobs enrolled at Parsons School of Design in New York to become a designer himself. Marc's first distinction came with the French “Golden Thimble” award in 1984.

Career Beginnings

Jacobs’ first truly original endeavor was a collection of original knitted sweaters “The Sketchbook label, Reuben Thomas, Inc”, which received a very warm response from the audience. 

At the same time, in 1984, together with Robert Duffy they founded the company Jacobs Duffy Designs Inc., and in 1996 his first women’s collection appeared, receiving the Council of Fasion Designers of America award. Jacobs and Duffy make the pages of fashion glossies, while buyers and major brands take interest in them.

In 1989 Marc and Robert are invited to Perry Ellis. Robert is offered the post of president, while Marc becomes creative director. At the time he is inspired by surfers and the spirit of country. But three years later, drawing inspiration from the style of Nirvana, the partners release a grunge collection that captivates the attention of the public and journalists. Perry Ellis executives decide that such an approach is too extravagant for them and let Jacobs go. 

Despite the dismissal, Marc again receives “Designer of the Year” from the Council of Fasion Designers of America. He works on his own label, releases the legendary “Falling Stars” collection, and soon makes his debut in menswear. 

In 1996 Marc is appointed lead creative director at Louis Vuitton, having secured the condition of support from the LVMH holding for the development of the Marc Jacobs brand.

First Marc Jacobs store and new-look accessories

With the money received from Bernard Arnault, Jacobs opens the Marc Jacobs boutique on Mercer Street and organizes several shows. At the same time, Mark works on the Louis Vuitton ready-to-wear collection, which is opposite in spirit to his own creations and reveals completely different facets of his design talent. 

Marc Jacobs pieces are a kind of rebellion against fashion bon ton. Street styles, music bands and tracks, cultural layers, and close attention to the colors used make each item of the brand special. 

By the mid-2000s the brand already owned 60 boutiques around the world. Jacobs’s name adorns six exclusive fragrances and clutches. Marc Jacobs bags and backpacks attract no fewer fans than the creations of Louis Vuitton. 

However, Jacobs does not limit himself to clothing or fragrances. At one time, his brand produced school supplies, surfboards, gadget cases, men’s loafers, and watches. 

Since 2013, Jacobs, having left Louis Vuitton, has focused primarily on his namesake brand, making his creations even more interesting.
