History of Talbots
The first small clothing store (which at that time wasn’t even just for women) was opened by the married couple Nancy and Rudolf Talbots back in 1947 – in the town of Hingham in the state of Massachusetts. The newlyweds painted the doors of their store bright red – and this symbol, the large characteristic “T” on a red background, still remains one of the company’s signs.
At first, things weren’t going very well. But then Nancy took on the search for products for sale. And her refined sense of style from her travels in France (she was there as part of the Red Cross during World War II, where, in fact, she met Rudolf) made itself known. Local women really liked the style. In the next 10 years, the Talbots opened three more stores in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Women with their families were moving to their new suburbs as a result of World War II – and stores with excellent clothing came in very handy. In these areas, Talbots clothing became an unofficial symbol of successful young mothers.
The business developed well, although Talbots’ prices were not the lowest. It was all thanks to the wife’s good taste, plus her husband’s talented entrepreneurial spirit. The network of stores spread across the USA and Canada, and now the company has more than 600 of its own large offline stores. And in the early 2000s, the company opened the official Talbots website, which is now very popular far beyond the United States.
