History of Everlast
In 1910, 17-year-old Jacob Golomb, the son of a tailor and an avid swimmer, founded the Everlast company as a manufacturer of swimming products. He wanted to develop fabrics that would last longer than all previously available swimsuits. Jacob guaranteed that his swimming suits would last longer than one year, and therefore named them "Everlast" ("Eternal"). Over time, the company began to sell a wider range of sports equipment.
For the first time Everlast released boxing gloves in 1917 — after the young Jack Dempsey, a future professional boxer and world heavyweight champion, asked Jacob Golomb to make him a pair that could last more than 15 rounds.
Later, the company produced boxing equipment for such athletes as Roberto Durán, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes, Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Muhammad Ali. Everlast became the world's most recognizable boxing equipment brand.
Jacob Golomb, the founder of the company, died in the 1950s, but the company was inherited by his son Daniel. He made the Everlast logo larger on the gloves produced by the company, and it proved to be a very successful decision: now all those boxers who performed in the company's gear essentially became advertising platforms for it.
The new logo also became more visible on black-and-white television, which was just taking over the United States. This helped the brand reach a truly national level. Even lower-tier athletes wanted to buy Everlast gloves to enter the ring like Muhammad Ali. Everlast boxing gloves became a symbol, the most recognizable gloves in the world, and every athlete knows about their "indestructibility" and quality.
In 1958, Ben Nadorf bought 50% of Everlast Sports, who later became one of the main figures in the world of boxing. Many world champions wore his gloves and shorts. In 1995, Nadorf came to own 100% of the company. In 2000, the company was bought for several tens of millions of dollars by a clothing manufacturer owned by George Horowitz. It produced sportswear and footwear under the Everlast brand, which could be purchased by gym enthusiasts as well as children involved in athletics. In 2007, the Everlast brand was acquired by Sports Direct, and then the company had its first MMA direction for the first time.
