What Buddhist Monks Train In: Where to Buy PUMA NITRO Running Shoes
05.09.2026
The Puma Meditation in Motion project was timed to coincide with the launch of the extreme high-altitude Ladakh Marathon. The stars of the collaboration were 40 Buddhist monks from the historic Thiksey Monastery, founded in the 15th century, located in the high-altitude Indian region of Ladakh.
The concept draws a seamless parallel between spiritual meditative practice and the challenge of ultramarathon running: both disciplines are rooted in iron-willed focus, deep rhythmic breathing, and complete presence in the moment. The striking contrast between ancient textured stonework, the sangha's traditional maroon-and-saffron robes, and modern running silhouettes made this campaign one of the most visually powerful releases in the brand's history.

The Ladakh race is widely regarded as one of the toughest and most uncompromising mountain ultramarathons on the planet. The flagship Silk Route Ultra distance (122 kilometers) starts at an elevation of 3,260 meters and climbs to the Khardung La pass at 5,370 meters above sea level. In conditions of severe oxygen deprivation, muscular endurance alone is not enough — mental resilience, self-discipline, and inner calm become decisive.
Puma, the event's official kit partner, organized a photo shoot inside the walls of the active Thiksey monastery. The images capture the monks in authentic woolen robes paired with Puma running socks and high-tech footwear, set against the majestic Himalayan monastery facades. Remarkably, the high-performance athletic shoes blended seamlessly into this centuries-old setting.
What the Monks Run In: Inside the Deviate NITRO Series
The campaign's hero shoe is the Puma Deviate Pure NITRO, engineered to strike the perfect balance between maximum energy return and a natural ground feel:
- NITROFOAM midsole: nitrogen-infused foam delivers exceptional resilience, powerful energy return, and effective impact cushioning — all at a record-low weight.
- Pure modification: the sole and last geometry is adapted to the natural biomechanics of the foot, ensuring a smooth heel-to-toe transition and long-distance comfort without excessive stiffness.
- PUMAGRIP traction: a durable rubber outsole compound provides reliable grip on dry mountain trails, smooth stone steps, and wet asphalt alike.
- Engineered Mesh ventilation: a multi-layer synthetic upper with zonal knit construction resists temperature fluctuations and efficiently wicks heat and moisture away from the foot.
