Martin Luther King Day: Big January Sales in the USA!
On January 15, 1929, one of the most famous human rights defenders, Martin Luther King, was born in Atlanta. His great-grandparents were slaves, and his grandfather was a poor peasant. His fight for the rights of African Americans began in 1955. Back then, a Black seamstress named Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a bus. Martin Luther King organized a boycott of public transportation that lasted 381 days. His house was bombed, and Parks was fired from the tailor shop. But in the end, they achieved the recognition of equal rights in transit, and the Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation on transportation was a violation of the Constitution.

Martin Luther King Day Sales
He was a renowned orator who delivered more than 2,500 speeches. Martin Luther King’s most famous speech, “I Have a Dream,” came after a march of 500,000 people in Washington. King exclusively used nonviolent forms of protest, but was jailed many times. On April 4, 1968, he was shot, and just a few days later Congress received a proposal to make his birthday a national holiday. In 1971, the petition was signed by 3,000,000 people.
Ultimately, President Ronald Reagan made Martin Luther King Day a holiday in the US in 1983. Today, this MLK day is celebrated every year on the third Monday in January. It is one of the very few federal holidays in America — a time for marches, parades, and for some, simply a day off to remember one of the most prominent fighters for people’s rights and freedoms.
In 2020, Martin Luther King Day falls on January 20 (in 2021 — on January 18).
