George Washington was the first President of the United States (from 1789 to 1797). He led the forces of the 13 colonies in the fight for independence, defeated the British troops, and formed a new nation based on the principles of freedom and equality. In America, he is revered as the "Father of the Nation," and the country's capital is now named in his honor. George Washington's birthday is now a national holiday. It is called Washington's Birthday, or Presidents' Day.

Presidents Day Discounts
The holiday has been celebrated since 1968. In all states, without exception. That's why retailers love it so much. It's a great opportunity to offer big discounts and lure customers into their store.
On one hand, Presidents Day comes right after Valentine's Day. But in reality these two holidays barely overlap at all. The sales feature completely different types of goods.
While Valentine's Day sees discounts on cosmetics, plush toys, bathroom products, and small gifts for men and women, in honor of their first president Americans offer discounts on everything else. Especially goods featuring patriotic symbols, footwear, clothing, and, of course, firearms (which, by the way, are prohibited to ship!).
Some sales start even before February 14, and they often run right through the end of the month. These are the biggest and longest-lasting February discounts in America! Yet outside the country almost no one knows about this holiday.
The main February sales are happening at these stores:
- Macy's – the store has already prepared a link, mainly clothing and shoes;
- Newegg – a great selection of electronics, including tablets, smartphones, and headphones;
- Walmart – souvenirs, Western/country/military-style clothing, patriotic goods, electronics.
- Amazon – discounts on the company's own products, including Amazon Kindle e-readers, Echo, Fire TV. The company runs many promotions on thousands of products, but the discounts aren't very large, mostly within 10-20%. Find electronics here and clothing and shoes here.
- Nordstrom – discounts up to 60% on clothing.
You should also visit the sites of Levi's, Eddie Bauer, J.Crew, Gap Factory, Ralph Lauren, and Levi's. On Presidents Day these clothing brands run good promotions in their official US online stores. Winter is ending, so you can often find winter collections being cleared out at big discounts.
