The History of ZARA
The founder of the brand is Spanish retail magnate Amancio Ortega, known as the hidden billionaire. From a small shop in the city of La Coruña to a global retail empire with more than 7000 stores, he made ZARA the biggest player in the ready-to-wear market.
In 1963, Ortega founded a knitwear factory for garment production. Its success set him on the path to the retail market, and 10 years later he opened a small store called Zorba, which had to be renamed ZARA.
Ortega began to follow the concept of inexpensive clothing that embodies ideas from the runway. Throughout the 1980s, he optimized development, production, and logistics to respond more quickly to new trends, calling his system "instant fashion." As early as 1985, the Inditex holding company was founded, with ZARA as its foundation. Today, the Inditex portfolio includes many other brands as well: ZARA Home, Pull & Bear, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Stradivarius, Oysho, Uterqüe.
"Fast fashion" changed our shopping habits. Ortega's idea was to democratize fashion, to make luxury items accessible to everyone. He believed that shoppers would view ZARA clothing as a perishable product — no different from yogurt or bread — for consumption, not for storage in closets.
Unlike its competitors, ZARA does not produce just one seasonal assortment. The brand's team of designers instantly identifies new trends and immediately launches them into production. As a result — four or five current collections after the initial seasonal launch. Ready-to-wear is delivered to points of sale within 48 hours. Thus, each ZARA store receives new items twice a week.
With around 6500 stores in 88 countries, the company keeps pace with technological progress. In 2010, ZARA online stores were launched in all European countries. Today, ZARA online platforms are present in 54 countries. More than 12% of all sales are already made online, and this figure continues to grow steadily. Each item has an individual unique code indicated in the description, making it easy to find both online and in an offline store.
The combination of all these qualities has allowed ZARA to become the largest clothing retailer in the world, and its founder — to take 4th place on the list of the richest people in the world.
