LEGO Announces the PlayStation 1 Set: Release Date, Price, and All the Details

07.09.2026

LEGO and Sony have teamed up to build a set modeled after the original PlayStation: set 72306 faithfully recreates the iconic gray console from 1994, and hidden under the disc drive lid are two mini dioramas inspired by classic games.

LEGO PlayStation 1 (72306) set on display

At a recent State of Play broadcast, Sony revealed something unexpected — not a game, but a building set. Together with LEGO, they've launched the collectible LEGO PlayStation 1 set, numbered 72306, aimed at retro console fans and experienced builders.

Gaming consoles are no stranger to LEGO. Before the PlayStation, both the Nintendo NES and Atari 2600 were recreated in bricks, and both became fan favorites among collectors. Sony's first console joins that lineup — it was, after all, the one that defined the look of home gaming.

Specs and Build Features

The box contains 1,911 pieces, and the finished model matches the console's real-world dimensions. Once assembled, it measures 26 cm wide, 19 cm deep, and 6 cm tall — a proper display piece for your shelf, not just a quick evening build.

The body replicates the texture of the gray PS1: ports, buttons, and those familiar curves. The controller is built separately — the designers went with the earliest D-pad gamepad and deliberately left out the analog sticks, just as it was in the console's early years.

Hidden Easter Eggs Inside the Console

The most exciting detail is hidden under the disc drive lid. Press the Open button, the drive flips up, and instead of a disc you'll find a secret compartment with two miniature dioramas inspired by legendary PS1-era games.

One diorama is a nod to Gran Turismo, the racing game that redefined the driving simulator genre. The other references the platformer Ape Escape, all about catching runaway monkeys. Both titles are considered hallmarks of the original PlayStation, and LEGO's choice feels very deliberate.

Collectors quickly spotted an amusing contradiction. Ape Escape was impossible to complete without a DualShock — the game relied entirely on two analog sticks. Yet the set includes an early-revision controller with no sticks at all. Many fans feel this little detail only gives the model more to talk about.

Release Date and Price

Sales will launch in two stages. From October 1, 2026, the set will be available to LEGO Insiders members, with general availability following on October 4. Early access for loyalty program subscribers is a standard LEGO move for major collectible releases.

Look for the set at official LEGO Stores and on the company's website. The recommended retail price in the US is $179.99. Limited-edition sets like this tend to sell out fast and later fetch more than their original price on the secondary market, making it appealing to both collectors and resellers.
