The history of Everlast
In 1910, 17-year-old Jacob Golomb, the son of a tailor and an avid swimmer, founded Everlast as a manufacturer of swimming products. He wanted to develop fabrics that would last longer than all previously available swimsuits. Jacob guaranteed that his swimming suits would last longer than one year, and therefore named them "Everlast" ("Everlasting"). Over time, the company began selling a wider range of sports equipment.
Everlast first released boxing gloves in 1917 — after a young Jack Dempsey, the future professional boxer and world heavyweight champion, asked Jacob Golomb to make him a pair that could last more than 15 rounds.
Later, the company produced boxing gear for athletes such as Roberto Duran, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes, Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Muhammad Ali. Everlast became the most recognizable boxing equipment brand in the world.
Jacob Golomb, the company’s founder, died in the 1950s, but the company was inherited by his son Daniel. He made the Everlast logo larger on the gloves produced by the company, and this turned out to be a very successful decision: now all those boxers who competed in the company’s gear essentially became advertising platforms for it.
The new logo also became more visible on black-and-white television, which was just taking over the USA. This helped the brand reach a truly national level. Even third-rate athletes wanted to buy Everlast gloves to enter the ring like Muhammad Ali. In 1958, Ben Nadorff bought 50% of Everlast Sports, and he later became one of the main figures in the boxing world. Many world champions wore his gloves and shorts. In 1995, Nadroff came to own 100% of the company. In 2000, the company was bought for several tens of millions of dollars by George Horowitz’s clothing manufacturing company. It produced sportswear and footwear under the Everlast brand, which could be bought by both gym enthusiasts and children involved in athletics. In 2007, the Everlast brand was acquired by Sports Direct, and that was when the company first launched an MMA line.
The exclusive technologies for creating nearly wear-proof materials were highly appreciated in the world of martial arts. Everlast MMA shorts and gloves receive very positive reviews. The brand received the World MMA Awards in the Best Equipment category five times — more than any other brand in the world.
Everlast MMA gear and boxing gloves are manufactured at a factory in America, in Moberly, Missouri. Some other products are made outside the country, under license. From the 1980s to 2003, the company also produced gear at a factory in the Bronx, in the center of New York.
