The brand was founded in Seattle in 1967 by Murray Pletz and his wife Janice ("Jan," which is where the brand name comes from). Janice was responsible for designing the first JanSport backpacks, and together with her husband they were the first to develop an innovation — a backpack with panel compartments. It could hold a lot of luggage, while at the same time remaining compact. Today, almost all backpacks we carry on our backs are designed according to this JanSport "panel" design. Each compartment is loaded from the top, and they are not connected to each other in any way.
This was far from the company's last innovation. In 1975, the couple introduced the fold-out JanSport backpack for travelers. It could be used around the city like an ordinary backpack, but it could expand, gain additional compartments on the sides, and turn into an excellent large backpack for camping or long hikes. And it had thick leather on the bottom, so it could be set down on any ground without worrying that something would tear there. Backpacks like these from the 70s have survived to this day, and are now sold for hundreds of dollars on eBay, where they are bought by collectors.
In that same 1975, the company released its signature daypack for the first time, a backpack for simply getting around the city, from home to the office. Today, these are the models that make up the majority of the company's sales. These are convenient, beautiful, and very durable items in which you can carry laptops, documents, or simply your favorite things, while keeping your hands free.

The most popular JanSport backpack models
JanSport Right Pack is a very common, versatile model. Dozens of color options, can hold a 15-inch laptop. Two pockets in front, one large one in the center. Everything closes with reliable and durable zippers.
JanSport Madalyn is a less common model with a snap stud in the center. Two sturdy little pockets in front. It is the same size as the Right Pack, but costs a bit more.
